Start with your annual usage

Find your kilowatt-hours (kWh) used per year — it's on your utility bill, or add up 12 months. A typical US home uses ~10,000–12,000 kWh/year, but yours could be far higher (pool, AC, EV) or lower. This number is the foundation; everything else just converts it into panels.

Convert usage into system size

Roughly, in a sunny state 1 kW of panels produces ~1,400–1,700 kWh/year (less in cloudier/northern states). So a home using 12,000 kWh/year needs somewhere around 7–9 kW to offset ~100%.
