Solar has more myths attached to it than almost any home upgrade — partly because the tech and incentives change fast, partly because pushy sales tactics muddy the water. Here are seven things people still believe in 2026 that aren't true.

Myth 1: "Solar doesn't work in cloudy or cold climates"

Panels run on light, not heat — and they actually produce more efficiently in cooler temperatures. Cloudy states like Massachusetts and New Jersey have thriving solar markets because their electricity rates are high, which is what really drives savings.

Myth 2: "You still get a 30% federal tax credit"

This one flipped in 2026. The 30% federal residential tax credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025. If a salesperson is still quoting a 30% credit on a cash or loan purchase, the numbers are wrong (full explanation).

Myth 3: "Solar means going off the grid"

Almost all home solar stays grid-connected. The grid is your backup and (with net metering) your virtual battery. Going fully off-grid is a different, far more expensive project most homeowners neither need nor want.

Myth 4: "Panels need constant maintenance"

They don't — no moving parts, and rain handles most cleaning. The main thing to budget is a possible inverter replacement once in the system's life (lifespan & maintenance).

Myth 5: "Solar will ruin my roof"

A proper install protects the roof under the panels. The real risk is installing on a roof near end-of-life — which is why a good installer checks roof age first.

Myth 6: "It's too expensive / never pays off"

Cost is real, but so is the rising bill you're already paying. In high-rate states the payback is faster than people expect (payback by state) — the question is whether YOUR numbers work, not a national average.

Myth 7: "All solar quotes are basically the same"

Not even close — same house, same panels, two quotes can differ by thousands on markup and financing (real costs). That's the entire reason to compare.
