A plain-English look at what solar actually costs in Florida in 2026 — directional price ranges, what drives the number up in the Sunshine State, and how to tell a fair quote from a padded one.
If you're a Florida homeowner trying to figure out what solar should cost, you're probably staring at a quote with one giant number on it and no idea whether it's fair. The short answer on price per watt
Most residential solar in Florida is priced "per watt" — total cost divided by system size in watts. In my experience reading Florida quotes, gross pricing often lands somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.20–$3.30 per watt before any incentives, though I regularly see quotes on both sides of that. Florida tends to price a little lower than the Northeast because labor and permitting are cheaper and the market is competitive. Treat that range as a directional gut-check, not a fixed rate — your roof, your installer, and your equipment all push the number around.
What that means for a whole system
Florida homes run bigger systems than most states because air conditioning drives our usage. A common residential system here might fall roughly in the 8 kW to 14 kW range depending on your annual kWh and roof space. Multiply a directional $/watt by that size and you can see why total quotes often land in the mid five figures before incentives. Don't anchor on your neighbor's number — their usage, shading, and equipment could be completely different. The system size should be driven by your actual annual kWh, not by whatever gets the salesperson to a comfortable commission.
FPL, Duke, TECO, OUC: why your utility matters
Most Florida homeowners are served by FPL, Duke Energy Florida, TECO, or a municipal utility like OUC or JEA — and your utility shapes the value of solar more than the panel brand does. Florida has historically credited net-metered exports at or near retail rate, but the exact terms, any fixed charges, and interconnection rules vary by utility and can change, so confirm the current rules with your utility before you sign anything.
A few things I'd nail down with your specific utility:
- How excess generation is credited month to month, and what happens to leftover credits at year-end.
- Any fixed monthly charges that stay on your bill even after you go solar.
- The interconnection timeline — some utilities move in weeks, some take longer.
If a rep quotes you "savings" without showing how your utility actually credits exports, that number is a guess dressed up as a fact.
The Florida wrinkle: hurricanes and your roof
Two things are genuinely different about buying solar in Florida. First, wind-load engineering: a proper Florida install is permitted and engineered for our wind zones, and that's one line item I never recommend cutting. Ask any installer how the racking is rated and permitted for your county. Second, your roof's age matters more here — if your shingles are within a few years of replacement, price the re-roof first, because removing and reinstalling panels later costs real money. A good quote addresses both without you asking.
What actually drives the price up
- Sales and dealer fees. Financed systems often carry a "dealer fee" baked into the price to cover the loan. It can be substantial and it's frequently invisible unless you go looking. The gap between a cash price and a financed price is usually this fee.
- Roof complexity. Multiple planes, tile roofs (very common here — tile installs cost more than shingle), steep pitches, or shading all add labor and equipment.
- Equipment choices. Premium panels, microinverters, and batteries raise the total. In Florida, a battery is often pitched as hurricane backup — sometimes worth it, sometimes padding. Price it as its own decision.
- Permitting and electrical work. Panel upgrades and wind-zone engineering can show up as line items.
Fair vs. padded: how I tell the difference
A fair Florida quote shows its work: system size, panel and inverter models, price per watt, and fees broken out. A padded quote hides behind one "all-in" number and a monthly payment, and the rep steers you toward how affordable the payment feels instead of what the system costs. Watch for:
- A cash price and financed price that are wildly different — that gap is the dealer fee.
- "Savings" built on aggressive assumptions about future FPL or Duke rate hikes.
- Pressure to sign today for a "discount" that supposedly disappears tomorrow.
One note on the federal tax credit
Be careful here, because a lot of reps haven't updated their pitch. The federal residential solar credit changed for 2026 — the long-standing 30% residential credit was not extended the way it had been in prior years. If anyone is quoting you a guaranteed 30% federal credit on a 2026 purchased install, that's a sign their information is out of date. Don't let a tax assumption inflate your "net" cost on paper.
