Am I Overpaying for Solar? How to Tell in 2026
The fastest way to know if your solar quote is overpriced: compare your price per watt to your state's market rate. Here's how — plus a free 30-second calculator.
Most homeowners have no way to know if their solar quote is fair — they only buy solar once, so they have nothing to compare it to. The good news: there''s one number that cuts through almost all of it, and you can check it in about two minutes.
The one number that matters: price per watt
Take the total system price and divide it by the system size in watts (kW × 1,000). A $24,000, 8 kW system is $3.00 per watt. Price per watt is the great equalizer — total prices look wildly different when system sizes differ, but price per watt lets you compare any two quotes apples-to-apples, and compare yours to the market.
What''s a fair price per watt in 2026?
It varies by state, equipment, and how you pay — but a fair residential gross price (before incentives) generally lands in the high-$2 to mid-$3 per watt range. Cash deals are usually lowest. Financed deals run higher (often because of dealer fees, more below), and leases/PPAs are their own animal. If your number is well above your state''s typical range, that''s a flag worth investigating.

5 signs you might be overpaying
- Price per watt well above your state''s range. The clearest signal. A review usually finds room to negotiate.
- A suspiciously low APR. A "2.99%" solar loan is often paid for by a large hidden dealer fee — sometimes 15–30% baked into the price. Always ask for the cash price and compare.
- A lease or PPA with an escalator. A small annual increase (1–3%) quietly raises your payment every year for 20–25 years.
- Vague equipment. "Premium 400W panels" instead of an exact make and model. You can''t value what you can''t identify.
- Pressure to sign today. Real pricing doesn''t expire in an hour. Urgency is a sales tactic, not a deadline.
Price isn''t the only thing — but it''s the fastest tell
A fair price per watt doesn''t guarantee a good deal (the financing, warranties, and production estimate all matter), and a high one isn''t always bad (premium equipment, hard roofs). That''s exactly why a second set of eyes helps. But price per watt is the 30-second gut-check that tells you whether to dig deeper.
